2012 Release 2 Government Budgets

This second Release concentrates on the income and expenditure of island governments and highlights a number of important trends. These include the main sources of government revenue with notable changes over time (e.g. the proportion of direct versus indirect tax) and how funds are being allocated to public services.

It is clear, those islands with higher GDP per capita figures will be in a stronger position to be spending more than those with weaker economies. Every effort has been made to ensure that where comparisons have been made between islands, such comparisons are based on similar base figures. Where possible, per capita spend is used to illustrate how much is being allocated to each main service.

There are some marked differences in the way island governments define services and, where these differences do occur, this has been identified in the Release.
